| In my most
current paintings, I explore the whimsicality of femininity in a
series of fashion sketches and spontaneous gestures of girls and
women. The challenging era of the 1930s and 40s , when ‘some
of it was fun’ is of particular interest to me.
The mystical strength
and energy of femaleness is represented by poking fun at the
textures and trappings of ‘girly fashion’. In some of these
paintings, I use the medium of acrylic and apply fabric swatches
of tulle, lace, and other trimmings to bring an element of three
dimensional structure and real life to the surface of the
painting. In others, the lusciously rich quality of oil paint
makes the physical act of painting a delight in itself and stirs
pleasure in the representation of the experience of women.
My work has appeared in
juried shows, including those of the Society of Canadian
Artists, the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Annual
Fall Show at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, Ontario. I have
also shown in the annual Schoolhouse Group of Artists Show, the
annual shows of the Whitchurch Group of Artists, the ‘Who Done
It’ shows at The Ontario College of Art and Design, the ‘Wh0
Art Thou’ show in the Chapel Gallery, and most recently the
Annual Spring Members' Show with Muskoka Arts and Crafts.
I am currently
represented in the Auburn Gallery of Fine Art in Gravenhurst,
Muskoka, Ontario. I am a professional picture framer and a
full-time student in third year at the Ontario College of Art
and Design, majoring in drawing and painting. |
