Robert started
carving decoys some 30 years ago. He is an avid hunter and
angler. This familiarity and love of nature caused him to
render his carvings in a traditional folk art form.
He has always
been interested in the Native and Inuit cultures, which
led to his carving a collection of Haida masks, boxes,
Thunderbird totem poles and eagles.
Over the years,
Robert has carved everything from tiny songbirds and
fishing lures to ducks, geese and life-size blue herons.
His current work is evolving in the direction of finely
carved show birds.
He is currently
producing birch bark and red osier dogwood tables, frames,
stools and mirrors. They are quite unique when combined
with birdseye maple inserts.
Robert is also
known for his Great Blue Heron carvings which are very
true to the likeness of wild herons, frequently seen near
his Washago, Ontario home.
He started
carving as a hobby, but has sold his work through antique
and gift stores, through private commissions and through
exhibiting at several shows including the Toronto Gift
Show.
Robert lives with
his wife, Marilyn, in a log home which he personally
constructed on five wooded acres in Severn Township.
