Muskoka is my home.

The light streaming through the studio window accompanied by the silence of a peaceful morning punctuated with the blue bird’s song. The pine tree holding steadfast to a rocky outcrop. The lush floor of ferns protected by the towering trees. These moments of discovery evoke in me a sense of wonder that I carry forth into my weaving.

"The problem is not that tapestry is too slow but the rest of the 20th century life is too fast."

Archie Brennan

Tapestry

Marni was introduced to fibre art while studying at The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. On the advice of an instructor Marni visited the textile studios. Through this introduction Marni knew that through fibre she could best express herself. The tapestries and hangings that Marni creates start as paintings in watercolour exploring colour and compostion. From here, yarns are dyed and the warp is put onto the loom.

Tapestry is best described as a weaving technique using discontinuous weft. The yarn is not passed from side to side but is built up in small sections creating a pictorial effect. It is a very labour intensive technique that can only be created by hand.

Marni's signature tapestries are textural, colourful works maximizing the yarns unique attributes when dyed. An undulating surface reflecting light best describes these soft, dimensional works in fibre.

Woven Hangings

The luminous sky, sunsets and the Northern Lights have always captured Marni's imagination. Through dyeing and weaving Marni strives to capture the mixing, layering colours focusing on evoking the feelings stirred within by these wonderul skies.
