Q&A

How did these people get my email address?

-Collection: There are many methods used to obtain an email address. Email addresses can be harvested from newsgroups, message boards, guest books, online contests, chain letters, joke emails, online greeting cards, mailing lists, web pages and software applications that require an email address to create an account.

-Random Name Generation: SPAM can be sent by generating and sending messages to a random list of email addresses containing names and initials. For example, johndoe@surenet.net, jdoe@surenet.net and jdoe@surenet.net.

-Common dictionary words will be used to create email addresses. For example, dictionary words such as blue, green, sun, sunday, flower, driver and train can be used to generate the email addresses blue@surenet.net, green@surenet.net, sun@surenet.net, sunday@surenet.net, flower@surenet.net, driver@surenet.net, and train@surenet.net.

Why am I receiving SPAM that is not addressed to me?

-The message is actually addressed to you but not seen in the "To:" or "Cc:" field. The sender has used the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) field instead.

My filter is enabled but I'm still getting SPAM!

-Defeating SPAM is an ongoing process. SPAMmers will continue to use tactics to defeat filters until laws are passed or violators penalized. You may eventually decide to install third party SPAM filtering software, an email client with built in SPAM filtering, or change your email address should the problem with SPAM become intolerable.  You can learn more about how you get SPAM by taking the SPAM IQ test here: http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/internet/inoca-bc.nsf/en/ca02127e.html

I am receiving messages and/or failure notices for messages I did not send!

-These type of failure notices are the result of SPAMmers or viruses inserting a false "from address" in an email.

Legitimate messages are being removed by the SPAM filter. What should I do?

-Consider dropping your detection level down one level.  The higher the SPAM Filter detection setting, the greater the chance of a "false positive" or legitimate email being detected as SPAM depending on the email and what similarities it may have to actual SPAM.

What can I do about SPAM?

  • Never reply or attempt to unsubscribe to SPAM. This will only confirm that your email address is active
  • Never buy anything that is advertised through SPAM. If they make money from SPAM, they'll keep sending SPAM.
  • Give your email address only to people you trust.
  • Install an email client such as Mozilla Mail or Thunderbird that prevents the loading of remote images. Email messages containing remote images can be used to determine if your email account is active.
  • Don't sign up for email lists such as "daily jokes", "stock market quotes", "news headlines" etc. This will only cause your email address to be distributed.
  • Don't forward chain letters, even jokes sent by your friends.  The email addresses will be harvested.
  • If an email looks suspicious to you, delete it.
  • Keep your Computer updated.
  • Install an AntiVirus and Firewall.
  • Enable your SureNet SPAM filter.
  • Install a third party SPAM Filter on your computer
  • Take the SPAM IQ test and learn how SPAMmers get your email address

How does SureNet SPAM Filtering work?

SureNet is using the latest technology to prevent SPAM or unwanted junk email from entering your email inbox. And best of all it's a FREE Service to all SureNet Customers. The service is optional and you can choose to:

1. Receive your mail normally, with no filtering

2. Have your email tagged with a SPAM label and continue to download it into your inbox

3. Have the filtering system detect and delete SPAM before you can download it.

4. Once a setting has been made, there is no need to reset it unless you want to change the setting higher or lower. Weekly reports indicating the effectiveness of the setting will be sent to you.  The service at its highest setting, eliminates about 80-90% of all email sent to you.  There is no need to reset the SPAM blocking service each week, the system remembers the setting from the last input.

SureNet has been using blackhole lists to bounce back email from servers that are known to be sending out bulk mail for many years. Our SPAM Filtering service will look at each email that comes into your mailbox and analyze it for special characteristics that usually indicate a message is SPAM. The more SPAM characteristics an email has the greater the likelihood it will be detected as SPAM depending on the filter level you set.

The SureNet SPAM Filtering service is private and secure. Junk email detection is an automated process. Nobody has access to your email except you. Nobody will read your email. Your email is not censored and YOU control the filter settings.

Select your SPAM Filtering mode:

  1. Don't Check for SPAM
This is the default setting. If you are currently using SureNet's SPAM filtering service and wish to stop using the service, select this option.
  1. Check for SPAM and tag Subject
If you wish to try out the SPAM
filtering service, this option is for you. Our SPAM filter will add “!*!*!SPAM!*!*!” to the subject of each message that is suspected of being SPAM. From there you can configure your mail client to move messages with “!*!*!SPAM!*!*!” in the subject to a special folder.

  1. Delete detected SPAM
This option will automatically delete messages suspected of being SPAM before they enter your mail box. Please use this option with caution; once a message is deleted we can not get it back. We advise all clients to try setting number #2 prior to using this option.
