John
has always been fascinated by the elegance and motion of
birds. This keen interest is evident in the authenticity
of his carvings of songbirds and other wildfowl. He
meticulously studies each species to ensure that the
delicate feathering and subtle shading are completely
true to life in these pieces of art. After the contours
are perfected, each feather is etched and burned to copy
the bird's complex, graceful plumage; then the brilliant
design of nature's hues is realized through
sophisticated painting techniques. John finishes his
fine work by choosing an artistic mount which suits the
style and form of each carved bird, with an eye to its
natural habitat.
The
precision, research, and artistry that John brings to his
craft have found recognition nationally and
internationally, winning top awards at woodcarving
exhibitions throughout Canada and at the Ward World
Championship Competition. |

A
quaint cabin at the edge of the forest in southern
Muskoka is an ideal studio for John's art. Numerous
birdfeeders around the studio attract many different
species, while the flowers invite the countless
ruby-throated hummingbirds. The windows flood the
workroom with light and offer a panoramic outlook on the
flora and fauna of the surrounding area. The scenic
wooded landscape, viewed through the large picture
window in the studio's showroom, is a perfect backdrop
for the carved birds on display. A summertime attraction
is found in ‘The Enchanted Forest’: its meandering
wooded trails are dotted with miniature fairytale
houses, rekindling childhood memories of the mythical
land of Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood, The Three Little
Pigs, and other classics from the magical realm of
fairytales and fables.
