Spring's Promise

Marilyn a Fine Art Honours graduate of the Ontario College of Art; recipient of the Mrs. W.O. Forsyth Scholarship for Woman Painter is a multi media visual artist.

The forest, rocks and water in the northern landscape are influential towards the evolution, exploration and development in her work. Her intention and goal in the making of art is to observe and interpret her subject in the various mediums with simplified designs and forms. Her ideas, observations and life experiences are expressed through her work by carving wood sculptures; making cement sculptures, photography in black and white and in the new digital medium and acrylic paintings. The subject’s emotion and essence is achieved through colour, shape, form and shadow.

Formal carved totems from a few inches to 18 feet are based on personal and universal symbols. Organic stylized sculptures are based on braids, knots, flowers particularly the favoured Calla Lily and birds. The designs are also incorporated in earrings, walking canes and spoons. Her multi media exhibition "Totems" was held in January, 1993, at the Chapel Gallery in Bracebridge and during February, 1994, at The Latcham Gallery in Stouffville. The exhibition included carved totems, painted acrylic banners, wall paintings and painted floor cloths.

Marilyn’s work is in private collections and some of her pieces have been included in numerous juried and invited exhibitions, as well as the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and Muskoka Arts & Crafts' Annual Summer Show.

She has demonstrated carving, taught workshops, invited juror of art, a member and volunteer of various art organizations.

Marilyn participates in the annual Seguin Regional Art Tour. It is held on the first weekend of August Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm in her Otter Lake Gallery located beside her home on Otter Lake.

In the summer she holds two day decorative cement garden sculptures workshop. Contact her for dates and information.

The gallery is open by chance or appointment from May to mid October. For appointment and directions please telephone or e-mail.
