Carmen by Jamie Sherman

August 30-September 20
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 30, 1pm-4pm
| Jamie’s father was
passionate about photography. In the family’s home, there were always
photography books and magazines, a darkroom, camera equipment and photo
albums. A constant background to the faint odor of developers was the
soundscape of camera shutters and earnest discussions about the merits
and pitfalls of colour, contrast and composition.
In the Sherman house, photography was always present. As a teenager, Jamie received a birthday gift of a 35mm camera with two lenses that cemented an already growing interest in the medium. By his early 20s, Jamie was shooting moody cityscapes and developing grainy images in a light-leaking kitchen darkroom. "My father would show me his latest old barn and flower shots and look tolerantly but comment encouragingly about my images of the underside of city life," recalls Jamie. The photographs taken by his father, Frank Sherman, were eventually published in magazines and shown at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Jamie’s son, Zander, couldn’t ignore photography either. As Jamie and his family traveled annually to the American Southwest, he noticed his son watching as he stopped frequently to set up a tripod to capture one ineffable scene after another. "Then one day, with his own camera, I noticed him taking his first pictures of me taking pictures," reminisces Jamie. "The concept of this three generation family photography show is, for me, more about family than photography: that learning to see photographically is about learning to see with heart, and how ultimately everything the father might have taught the son about light probably originated less from photography books than throwing a ball in the backyard," remarks Jamie.
