All the While in the Wild: Paintings by Peter Buwalda
Recently, Peter's work has been detailing the Georgian Bay area, focusing on the plant material as usual, but with a strong sense of landscape and space too. Now, he turns his subjective attention to the Haliburton Highlands as he studies the flora and their environment. For this exhibition, Peter incorporates large, full colour paintings that are accompanied by black and white sketches and the notes used for each piece.

Paintings by R.W. Haviland & Mendelson Joe

Knowing her own landscape intimately gives a particular vocabulary to the canvases produced by Bobbie in her studio. From Mendelson Joe’s studio, less than 20km away, come canvases with a different dialect of the same language. This is an exhibition of their shared observations (on the beauty, oddness or brutality they see, close up, in their environment) that should provide dramatic, joyful and dark interpretations. "My contribution to the show would be a continuation of the series of large, acrylic canvases based on small, fast sketches, done here in Armour Township, including images that reflect my feelings about the need for sane solutions to our mobility dilemma, locally and globally," says Bobbie. "When I moved to this area southwest of Burk’s Falls (almost seven years back), I was drawn to the work, the ethic and the character of one R.W. Haviland," remarks Mendelson Joe. "My contribution to the Bobbi-scapes and Joe-scapes would encompass portraits of Bobbi, depictions of her homestead atop high ground southwest of Burk’s Falls, as well as my impressions of the beauty (and ugliness of our neighbourhood around Doe Lake."

Duet: Acrylic Paintings by Wendy Moses & Sharon Stock Feren
Wendy and Sharon discovered that they often see the world in similar shapes, tones, colours and feelings. They wondered if the same subject matter would produce similar outcomes when each artist created an abstract from a single photograph. Would the resulting two pieces, when viewed together be harmonious or discordant? What colours would each one choose after looking at the photograph? How would they interpret the emotions that the photo evoked? It was a project that both of the artists eagerly pursued. Each one chose three photographs from her own collection. So as not to influence each other, the paintings were done in each one’s own studio. The resulting duet of abstractions would be a surprise to them both.
